What are cabinet hinges?

Cabinet hinges may seem simple, but they vary widely for applications, from kitchen cabinets to marine settings.

Adjusting Cabinet Hinges – A Step-by-Step Process
This is a simple process that will help you adjust your cabinets and cabinet doors, ensuring they are level and flush.
Tools Required for Adjustment
To adjust cabinet hinges, use a Phillips or Pozidriv screwdriver based on the screw type. Using the wrong one can cause slipping and breakage.
You can identify the screw type by inspecting the head: Pozidriv screws have star-shaped lines engraved on the head, while Phillips screws do not.
Step 1: Adjust the hinges side to side
This adjustment helps ensure that the door is flush with the left and right edges of the cabinet.
- Locate the back screw on the hinge (on the right side when you look at the hinge).
- Turn this screw to move the door closer to or further away from the cabinet body.
- Be careful: Over-adjusting may cause a gap between the door and the cabinet along some or all of its edges.
Step 2: Adjust the hinges in and out
This adjustment will ensure that your door is vertically level with the cabinet body on both the left and right sides.
- Locate the front screw on the hinge (on the left side when facing the hinge).
- Adjust this screw to move the edge of the door left or right to ensure that it is vertically aligned with the cabinet.
- Again, be careful: Over-adjusting may cause the door to hang over the cabinet, either showing the inside edge of the shelving unit or sticking out of the edge of the cabinet.
Step 3: Adjust the hinges up and down
This adjustment is critical to ensure that your door is horizontally level with the cabinet on the top and bottom edges.
- The adjustment screw for this step may be in one of two locations:
- In the recessed area between the left and right screws.
- As an additional screw on the hinge plate.
- Turn this screw until the door is level at both the top and bottom.
- Over-adjustment can cause the door to protrude above the cabinet or hang too low, exposing the top edge of the cabinet’s internal unit.
